A large shrub or multiple-stemmed tree growing 6 to 10 m tall. Leaves are broadly ovate to orbicular, with pointed tips and bases slightly cordate, upperside of leaves shiny and glabrous, underside greyish green and slightly hairy, turning yellow in autumn. Flowers pink to violet red, 1 to 2 cm long, appearing 4 to 8 in clusters from April to May. The hardiest species of the genus, with a much more vigorous growth than C. siliquastrum and developing a lovely shape when older with slightly smaller flowers, and considered one of the more interesting flowering tree due to its cauliflory (flowers appearing on tree trunk). D, S, St. Zone 7a.
