ROSA villosa (= pumifera)

A shrub about 2 m tall with densely growing shoots and few runners. Branches of young shoots appear with reddish coating. Leaves 8 to 9 cm long, leaflets elliptic to elongated, upperside bluish green and glaucous, underside greyish white and equally glaucous. Flowers pink, 3 to 5 cm long, singly or up to 2 to 3, appearing from June to July. Fruits strikingly large, round to oval, 2 to 3 cm long, bright red and edible. A robust plant for landscaping work, also as sanctuary and food provider for birds, but equally high in ornamental value for gardens and parks. B, Z. Zone 5a.
