Ribes - little vitamin bombs

Stickleberries and currants belong to the Ribes genus. Among the 140 to 160 different species, there are numerous varieties that are suitable for growing for yield or for use in private gardens. Ribes do not have high soil requirements and usually tolerate winter cold well.

In commercial cultivation, bush cultivation of currants and gooseberries has long been a proven standard. For fresh produce, spindle or hedge cultivation has become increasingly popular. This cultivation method favors higher yields and great fruit quality thanks to the space-saving method.

Ribes are used as fruit bushes, ornamental plants and for the production of perfume. The fruits of the red currant (with red and white varieties), the black currant and the gooseberry are used as fruit. The jostaberry was bred by crossing the blackcurrant with the gooseberry. The flowers of the blackcurrant are used for perfume production.

All blackcurrants have a high vitamin C and P content, while gooseberries contain many vitamins and minerals. The popular berries are ideal for freezing and can be used in a variety of ways for fresh consumption or in culinary dishes.
