Raspberries and blackberries

Kings of berries

Because of their great taste, raspberries and blackberries are considered the “queen of berries”. They are used as fresh produce for consumption or as raw produce for the processing industry (jams, juices). They are also suitable for deep-freezing

Commercial cultivation benefits above all from the new varieties of autumn raspberries. These are robust against cane and, to date, root diseases, are maggot-free and have a long harvest period so that fresh berries can be constantly harvested. Until over 20 years ago, ‘Zefa 3’ in particular was widely used for the fall harvest. Of the varieties added at the end of the 1980s, ‘Autumn Bliss’ (= ‘Blissy’®) and its yellow-fruited "sister" ‘Golden Bliss’ became established. New to the market are ‘Himbo Top’, ‘Polka’ and ‘Pokusa’, which are an improvement on ‘Autumn Bliss’ in terms of taste and fruit size.

Blackberries were first cultivated in the 19th century, with several wild forms serving as a starting point. They are not very demanding in terms of location and prefer sunny, sheltered locations. The yield is comparable to that of raspberries (100 dt/ha). Varieties suitable for cultivation are high-yielding, robust, large-fruited and have a good taste.
