Cultivated elderberry: special varieties for commercial cultivation
Elder is more than just a niche: cultivation has expanded considerably and the demand for special products ranging from flowers to juice, brandy, dye and as a remedy has increased. Up to now, the main focus of variety recommendations has been on yield. Increasingly important criteria in the selection of varieties are ingredients, yield behavior, ripening time, trickling of the cones and, increasingly, susceptibility to pests.
Based on many years of experience in Austria and Germany, ‘Haschberg’ has established itself as the standard. The variety ‘Haidegg 17’ can be used universally and has large cones with large individual berries. The Danish Sampo variety is characterized by very uniform cone ripeness, flowability and health. Its early ripening proves to be advantageous in climatically later areas and in regions with higher rainfall in September.
