CORNUS mas (= mascula)

A large, broad-growing shrub or small tree, up to 6 m tall, valuable as honey-producing plants; leaves egg-shaped and dark green; a striking effect due to its numerous, golden yellow flowers borne in a bundel in early spring (February/April); fruits in autumn are shiny red and edible, rich in vitamin C - an undemanding plant for the open fields, adapting to dry and calcareous soils, a very good plant for hedgerows; flowering sprigs can be forced to flower early. D, H, R, St. Zone 5a.
